PRESENTATION: Scratch & Sniff Swatches with Maggie Casey (November 14, 2026)

There are hundreds of sheep breeds, each with unique fleece; some wool is so soft it's spun and woven into christening blankets for kings and others durable enough for carpets that last centuries. Maggie is on a tactile educational journey to compare the yarn she can produce from as many of the hundreds of sheep breeds as she can and then knit a swatch from each yarn for a tactile comparison of breeds. See and feel the results of Maggie's study as she discusses her extensive knowledge of wool.

WORKSHOP English Long Draw vs. American Long Draw - Maggie Casey (November 14, 2026)

What’s the difference between English long draw (double drafting) and American long draw? It depends. We’ll spin wool and cotton both ways and you can see the difference yourself and add another drafting method to your spinning repertoire.

Skill Requirements: Beginning spinning skills required. Students should be able to spin a continuous yarn and be comfortable with their wheel.

Course Fee: $30 (you must be an NCWG member in good standing)

Materials Fee to be paid to instructor: $15

Instructor Bio:

Maggie Casey is an icon in the spinning community, especially in Colorado. Although many spinners know her as the co-owner of Shuttles Spindles & Skeins, she's more widely known as a premier spinning instructor. Although her brick-and-mortar shop closed in 2020, Maggie has remained quite busy by writing for SpinOff magazine, teaching at the Estes Park Wool Market, Harrisville Designs, John C Campbell Folk School, Maryland Sheep & Wool, PlyAway and SOAR, offering several online classes through Long Thread Media, and continuing to operate the online presence of Shuttles Spindles & Skeins. Maggie's book, Start Spinning: Everything You Need to Know to Make Great Yarn, was published in 2008.

After you register, your information will be passed on anonymously to a secret fiber friend--they'll only get the answers to your non-identifying questions. They will not know your name or contact info.

You should bring a gift that suits your Fiber Friend to our December 12th meeting. This will take place in person. You must be a member of the guild to participate.

Gifts should be:

• Under $15

• Anything fiber-related, or anything tangible that might "help" your person with their fiber journey (including snacks, tea time, coupons for a year's worth of words of encouragement, wine, whatever you think could be useful to one of our members)

• Handmade, or not!

• Something thoughtful and fun

• Wrapped

WORKSHOP Contemporary Landscape Embroidery with Anna Hultin (March 13, 2027)

Discover the art of landscape embroidery with Anna Hultin as she guides you to transform your observations of nature into works of art using needle and thread. During our time together, we'll explore different contemporary embroidery techniques alongside innovative uses of mixed media, including watercolor and fabric collage. Inspired by the beauty of our Colorado landscape, you'll learn how to turn simple nature observations into works of art.

Registration to open in mid-September, 2026. You must be a member to register.

Registration Fee: $45

Materials Fee: $25

Materials Provided by Instructor: Embroidery floss, hoops, wool roving, scissors, water soluble markers, fabric

Materials Registrants should bring: Sketchbook and materials fee.

Skill Requirements: All levels welcome!

Instructor Bio:

Anna Hultin is an artist, teacher, gardener and mama living in Loveland, Colorado. After receiving a BFA in drawing and art education from Colorado State University, she continued to pursue drawing, sculpture, and installation. Since becoming a mom her work has taken on a new, more flexible form: needle and thread. Her embroideries are inspired by the textures of the grasses and plains in Colorado. She teaches local workshops out of her studio, writes art curriculum for Paideia Classical Community, and teaches online classes for Creativebug and Domestika. She most recently published her first book, A Stitched Landscape, with Storey Publishing.

WORKSHOP: Sashiko-ori: Theme and Variations (April 10, 2027)

Sashiko-ori are supplementary warp and weft woven structures based on the Japanese folk stitching techniques of sashiko. In this workshop, students will start with a basic, but very versatile, threading to try out different types of patterns based on the hitomezashi style of sashiko. Students will then experiment with changes in threading, treadling, design, and color.

Dates & Times:

Saturday, April 10: 1-5 PM
Sunday, April 11: 9AM-5PM
Monday, April 12: 9AM-5PM

Registration Fee: $325

Materials Fee (to be paid directly to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop): $42

Materials to be provided by instructor:

Warp and weft yarns
Stitching materials
Handouts

Students will warp and thread cotton warps provided by the instructor the first morning.

Participant materials/equipment to bring:

Floor or table Loom YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH with at least six shafts
8-dent reed
Two boat shuttles and bobbins
Bobbin winder (if they have them, we can share)
1/2” or 1” raddle (if they have them, we can share and I’ll bring a couple for back to front warping)
Sticks, heavy paper, mats, whatever they use to beam on
Threading, sley hooks, etc.
Graph paper or notebook
Laptop, smartphone or tablet helpful for design process with free program I’ll demonstrate.

NOTE: Even though this is a supplementary warp structure it does not require a separate warp chain so no extra warp beams, weights, warp separators, etc. are necessary.

Instructor Bio:

Beth Ross Johnson is a weaver, teacher and workshop leader living in Black Mountain, North Carolina. A lifelong fascination with Asian art led to an interest in Japanese textiles and she has had two extensive stays in Japan to study kasuri (ikat weaving and dyeing) and sakiori (rag weaving) with master weavers there. Other avenues of exploration have been sashiko stitching and nyoho-e (Zen stitching). Recent studies have been in the ikat traditions of Europe, influenced by the 18th century wave of Orientalism on the continent, and woven structures like sashiko-ori and kasuri-ori that mimic hand stitching and ikat processes. She maintains a studio and teaches in formal and informal institutions. She is co-authoring a book on sashiko-ori.
